Dead Wood Analyse in Beech Forests on Southwestern Side on the Ukrainian Carpathians

N.V. Rehush

The importance that dead wood has in a forest ecosystem was analyzed. The timber volume of standing dead wood was estimated in managed and natural beech forests on the southwestern side of the Ukrainian Carpathians. This was done using terrestrial sample plots. Further, the size distribution and decay classes of standing dead trees were assessed. The result of the study demonstrates that standing dead wood volumes in the managed beech forests are much lower than in the natural forests assuming that there were no catastrophic disturbance factors.
