INTRODUCED TREE SPECIES IN TERMS OF PROTECTED AREAS: RISKS AND CHALLENGES

O.T. Danchuk, Т.І. Danchuk-Dvoretska

Abstract

Some issues of handling of exotic species in natural protected areas are analyzed. The risk factors that threaten the gene pool of local populations are found to be the following: possible penetration of dangerous diseases and pests of alien origin, and some related exotic species into the natural ecosystems of Ukraine; low resistance of arboflory native species against them; the possibility of hybridization between local and exotic species; reducing the biological stability of ecosystems. The necessity to improve atural security legislation of Ukraine to its approach to European and international standards and to prevent the impact of introduced factors as biological hazards is substantiated.
