The Influence of Lichens To 137cs Migration in Pine Forest Conditions of Polissya Nature Reserve

Abstract

The migration of radionuclides in forest ecosystems depends on soil and hydrological conditions and the rate of decomposition of forest litter. Ground lichens appear as intermediaries between air pollution and soil, and are depositors of radioactive substances. In the dry and fresh pine forest conditions they have a significant impact on migration in forest ecosystems. Thus, the purpose of research is to determine the effect of ground lichens on the 137Cs migration in system "soil – plant" in bor conditions of Polissya Nature Reserve. The research includes route-forwarding and laboratory tests by standard methods. The test samples were taken in the territory of Polesye Natural Reservation. Spectrometric studies are conducted by licensed laboratories of the Institute of Regional Environmental Problems of Zhytomyr National Agroecological University. We revealed that the migration of radionuclides in forest stands depends on several factors, the main of which are soil-hydrological conditions and the rate of decomposition of forest litter. The process of decomposition of forest litter depends on the composition of living ground cover. Ground lichens significantly accelerate it. We have also determined that the lichen accelerate the decomposition of litter in coniferous forest plantations, resulting in a more intense release of 137Cs from forest litter and transferred it to the available for plants and water-soluble forms of exchange in the soil. This leads to an increase in the migration of radionuclides in forest ecosystems. The coefficients of 137Cs transition in higher plants in dry and fresh forests with lichen cover are higher than in plantations without lichens. Thus, our conclusion evaluates that the effect of lichen cover on the distribution of 137Cs in forest ecosystems is expressed primarily in accelerating the release of radionuclides from the forest litter and promote access to plant their chemical forms in the soil.
